The Boston Public Schools Human Resources Office wanted to implement a leadership development initiative for its Operations and Finance managers, who had never before received any sort of professional development.  Amid a context of dwindling resources and increasing accountability, there was a desire to increase manager capacity in order to help in the execution/implementation of priority initiatives.

DMC Solution:

DMC partnered with Boston Public Schools on the Management Institute, a leadership development program that provides professional development, coaching, cross-functional collaboration, and the achievement of real results.  Each participant is asked to develop a “performance challenge” and they are supported over the course of a 15-week program by a DMC coach, a group of their peers, and a prescribed performance challenge process to help achieve their goal.  The goals should be specific, measurable priorities for their department’s work.

Result:

The first group of 24 participants that completed the program achieved 75% of the goals they outlined at the beginning of the program.  For one manager, this meant a cost savings of $80,000 in plumber contracting costs.  For another, it meant an increase in student breakfast participation that would generate $300,000 in additional annual revenue.  A second group of 25 managers has already kicked off their own performance challenge process as part of the Institute, and 95% of the original group have asked that their Institute experience be continued into the future.
