John J-H Kim, Chief Executive Officer
John is Co-Founder and CEO of The District Management Council, an organization focused on bringing the best management and leadership practices to its network of public school district leaders and managers from around the country.
John brings to DMC his extensive background in education, business and management. John has started and led several organizations in the education field. John was the founding CEO of Chancellor Beacon Academies, Inc., a school management company that grew to serve more than 20,000 children. John started and served as President of Kaplan Learning Services, the institutional division of Kaplan, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. Prior to joining Kaplan, Mr. Kim co-founded Crimson & Brown Associates (CBA), a leading targeted career services firm assisting companies to identify and hire minority students. He served as Chairman and CEO of CBA until its sale to Kaplan.
John's management experience includes his tenure as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, Inc., a global strategic management consulting firm, where he helped clients implement new strategies and improve operating efficiencies. John also served as an Executive Vice President of Rakuten, Inc. (Jasdaq: 4755), one of the world's largest and most comprehensive Internet service companies, providing leading services in e-commerce, portal & media, travel, financial services, and professional sports. He also served as President and CEO of Rakuten USA, the U.S. division of Rakuten, including serving as Chairman and CEO of Linkshare, a leading on-line marketing company helping to drive more than $3 billion in online sales.John serves on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations and corporations. John serves as the Vice Chairman of the National Governing Board of BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), a non-profit organization that increases the educational and life achievement of elementary school children living in low-income communities. He is on the Executive Committee of the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) at Phillips Academy, Andover and is on the Board of Overseers of The Shady Hill School, a pre K-8th grade independent school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. John was also on the founding board of the Boston Collegiate Charter School, now one of the highest performing charter schools in Massachusetts. John currently also serves on several corporate boards and is a member of The National Advisory Council for Scholastic Inc.
John received an AB magna cum laude from Harvard College, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
