DMC’s 9th Superintendents’ Strategy Summit occurred January 18-20, 2012, in New York City. The focus of this year’s event was the importance of developing human capital as a way to increase organizational effectiveness. DMC presented on a various topics related to human capital through the lens of motivation. The conference featured a variety of interactive exercises and guest speakers to provide examples of the power of teams, designing jobs strategically, and motivating through non-monetary rewards, all strategies to help unleash a district's greatest hidden asset: human capital.

Thursday morning's introductory session at the Superintendents' Strategy Summit included a brief overview of the increasing complexity of school districts, and the potential that a highly motivated workforce has for driving organizational performance. This session also introduced four major levers for managing motivation in school districts.
Participants analyzied a Harvard Business School case study on online retailer Zappos.com, and discussed how the focus on company culture and teamwork could relate to the school district setting. Participants worked through this exercise during the the Unleashing Higher Performance and Strengthening Culture through Teams session. The exercise focuses on developing team structures and behaviors, as well as assessing team dynamics and functions.

This session on Friday morning focused on strategic staffing as a lever for increasing employee motivation. Developing a strategic staffing approach helps prioritize a district's focus and resources and ensures that each individual is matched to the appropriate position, thereby developing a district's human capital.
This exercise was facilitated during the Achieving Higher Performance by Designing Jobs Strategically session, and focuses on the importance of developing a staffing strategy that links to the district's theory of action and prioritizing roles within the district based on that strategy.
This session on Friday morning emphasized the importance of career management for developing employees and introduced DMC's Career Management Cycle. Participants were tasked with assessing their own employees' future potential to identify growing leaders and performed a bench strength analysis.
This exercise, from the Unlocking Organizational Potential by Managing Careers session, underscores the importance of developing the career management aspects of a district's staffing strategy. Career management allows district leaders to develop internal candidates for positions, and highlights areas to focus on for recruitment.
This Friday afternoon session highlighted the effect non-compensation based rewards can have on employee motivation, and provided practical ways for leaders to implement recognition based tactics for improving motivation.
